Email Notifications/Account Activation

Helloooo Everybodeeee! :)

I'm posting this in the General Chinwagging section so that everyone

can read it -- even new registrants whose accounts haven't been

activated yet.

As you might already know, some of us have

been having problems receiving email notifications from

the MFC ever since we moved servers all those weeks ago.

For some reason, many of our ISPs (Internet Service Providers)

don't like the new server we're on, and block any email that

comes from it. That's why you're not getting your email

notices when someone sends you a PM or there's a post

to one of your subscribed threads. And it's also why

many new users are not receiving an activation email when they

register for the MFC.

Our awesome tech god StandardToaster has been looking into this

to correct the problem, but until it's fixed, we've come up with

a work-around. (Kudos to Christine for suggesting this :) )

Sign up for a gmail account at gmail.com.

Then, change your email address in your

MFC account to that gmail account. It seems like the

gmail server likes our server and will accept emails from it

without a problem, so you should begin to get notices

there. :biggrin2:

If, like me, you don't want to have to keep checking your

gmail account for notices, you can set it

to forward the email to whatever email address you wish.

Instructions for forwarding gmail:

http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=10957&topic=13303

If your server is still blocking the gmail notices you can

install the gmail notifier so you will be alerted when

you get gmail through a little icon in your taskbar.

Read about the gmail notifier here:

http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/notifier_windows.html

Finally, for those of you who have registered but

have not received an activation email -- send a PM

to one of the moderators

asking if we could please oh please

manually activate your account so that you could begin

posting. (As an alternative, you could also register using

a gmail account address to begin with and pick up

the activation email from there.)

Any questions? As always, don't hesitate to

contact me or one of the other mods, or FREDDIESDOUBLE.

Bump for any newbies who might want to do this.:wink2:

Thanks, Jess -- I know it's a lot of effort to go through, but until

we get whatever issues are causing the problems resolved, this is

the next best thing. Luckily, we have Andrew (ST) on the case, trying

to sort it out! :thumb_yello:

So, if Christine was the one who suggested it, does she get to be the "Tech Goddess"?:naughty::roftl:

BUMP -- because it seems like there's a lot of new members "Awaiting

Activation," and because it seems like the email notifications are not

working again... *sigh*

It's been a while since I bumped this... hope that all the new

registrants we've been getting lately see this! PM me or one of

the other mods if you haven't received your activation email yet! :thumb_yello:

I had this problem, but It was resolved later :bleh: I didn't wait too much, only 5 days, no more.

I'm glad to hear that Melanie -- but some people have been waiting a

while, I'm sure. The thing is, we don't know about it unless they tell

us, so hopefully some of them will read this and give us a shout. :thumb_yello:

Seems like there are a lot of new registrations whose accounts haven't

been activated yet, so I thought maybe this would get some of them to

read the instructions on the first page.

Again, if you or one of your friends, has joined MFC but has NOT received

an email notice to activate your account, please send a message to

me or one of the moderators and we'll get you sorted out! :thumb_yello:
