Except if you want to go to Biodome (http://m.espacepourlavie.ca/en couldbe fun with the little one) or St.Joseph Oriatory, both easily accessible by bus/metro, you're right. Most attractions are downtown

The metro is linked to many building by indoor tunnels, could be practical if the weather stays as cold as now...

Fido is a good provider, you should be OK with it. No train to go to Mtl Airport but a bus, the 747 (run by Société de transport de Montreal) or cabs which are at a fixed 40$ rate from downtown. You could find all the various way to go to the airport at http://www.admtl.com/en/access

I haven't experienced it personally but if you have tickets for other shows that enable you to experience the full thing, I would say why not? It's a cheap way to be part of the event.
