Non-native linguist's point of view (read: book knowledge) In the examples you gave the verbs are transitive particle verbs which have a nominal object (shirt, light, plate). If the object is an ordinary noun the preposition may be on either side of the noun (Turn the lights on / Turn on the lights), although in very long phrases it tends to come before the noun: Turn on the lights in the children's room where the kids are playing So basically in shorter sentences you can use the prep in either position, this is the rule (which of course has so many exceptions but let's not go there ). In respect to the unspoken rules of grammatically correct people you'll have to take Silver's word.

This boy is definitely talented, but (may be that it's the :fangurl:ing mode ON speaking) in the recording MIKA's voice was ... I don't know how to explain it ... light(?) and extremely pure, crystal clear. Furthermore, I've listened to the recording for so many times now and at one point I remembered that when I was a child, we too had a child prodigy of the kind in Estonia. He also had a crystal clear voice until it broke and I haven't heard of him since, although it was believed that he would definitely have a successful career as a singer. Now that I compare him to MIKA at 15 there's a huge difference of course, but surely he was not trained the way MIKA was. MIKA's mom must have had such a strong faith in him. Talent alone is not enough if it's not developed and at the end of the day, putting hours and hours into pressuring your child to become something is not enough, if he or she does not have the passion for it.
