Oh and Jack...you were out the tangent...can you post something without exaggerating please?? We all understood the privacy thing, we didn't broke that law and we won't for sure...al least people I know here :wink2:

Where did I exaggerate anything? I just said that we already limit speech on this forum, for various reasons. We don't post private pictures or information because we want to respect privacy--in my mind, undue discussion of Mika's sexuality isn't very respectful either, but that's just me... We don't allow racism or obscenity because we want to keep a pleasant atmosphere. We also decided to not allow explicit sexual posts or stories, because we want to keep the forum safe for younger members and because some of us also think that sort of stuff is disrespectful. But in the end, it all comes down to limiting speech based on what kind of information and discussions we want this forum to have.

I am part of another forum where there IS free speech, btw. It also allows racist and hateful speech and pornography and anything else you could imagine. I mean, we had a member hit by a car and lying in a hospital in grave condition, and some other people who disliked him were making fun of him and posting offensive pictures, and that was allowed. That's the negative side of having free speech. The positive is the lack of constraint and the interesting conversations. I have campaigned against any limitations to speech on that board, but that board is different. The things that are applicable there would not be here, because I think we have a different vision of what we'd like MFC to be like.

By the way, the part of my last post where I exhorted people to think about what they were posting publicly and self-censor applied just as much to the Mikagasmic thread (which I often find offensive, honestly) as to anything else. I don't think I want it to be an official rule that we can't discuss details of Mika's private life (such as the ins and outs of what his posture means for his sexuality) or his body (though, really, geez people!!). But I do think people ought to restrain themselves a bit on their own consideration.

Can I just say that I wish everyone would cut out the dramatics about our precious free speech being infringed upon, and how sad this poll is? Free speech may be a political right in many of our respective countries, but it is not something that applies here. Privately-owned and moderated boards never have free speech, because they belong to a specific person or group, and that person or group has the right to decide what is or is not an allowed topic or mode of conversation.

Right of answer: I totally agree with you, this is a private forum, and the owners have the right to do whatever they want. If you had read my first post of today, you would have known I was criticizing the irony of asking people to VOTE on "free speech". This what I find sad.

We already do not have free speech here. Swear words are censored, and one of the rules is that racist, violent, or otherwise hateful speech is not allowed. If someone were to start an obscene or racist thread, the moderators would shut it down immediately, and no one would complain “but what about free speech, I have a right to post explicit pictures or to mock and insult Jews!”

This is also why I had added all threads should be allowed unless they are OFFENSIVE or insulting.

:bleh: But I find the Mikagasmic thread offensive. I also find people debating on whether Mika scratching his nose meant he was signaling to us that he's straight, and whether his frowning meant he was uncomfortable with being called gay or maybe just had gas that morning offensive as well. What is offensive?

I'm not sure what my point is, except... we ban other offensive things. A poll would at least let us see the majority position here. I wouldn't want any subject to be shut down from an authoritarian perspective, but if people vote and agree that most of them don't want to see something on here because they don't feel it's appropriate... I could be all right with that.
