Belgian 'Live in cartoon motion DVD' Review

Volgepropt en veelbelovend

 

 

Het lijkt een paradox. Mika is een nieuw opkomend talent en toch slaagt hij erin om een dvd uit te brengen met daarop dubbel zoveel beeldmateriaal als de modale pop/rock-artiest die een dvd'tje uitbrengt. Maar het hoeft helemaal geen paradox te zijn, want deze jongen heeft veel, heel veel, te bieden.

Op 'Live in cartoon motion' staat het optreden dat hij op 30 juni vorig jaar gaf in de Olympia in Parijs. De zaal is uitverkocht tot de laatste vierkante centimeter en dat mag ook wel, want Mika is vandaag de dag nog steeds voor 1/3 Parijzenaar. Afkomstig uit Beirut woonde hij immers in Parijs eer hij terecht kwam in Londen. Het verklaart in ieder geval het charmante accent dat schuilgaat in het Engels waarmee hij zingt.

Mika heeft nog maar één plaat uit. Die mag dan wel ontzettend goed verkopen, maar om zijn set te vullen, moet hij wel alles inzetten. 'Relax', 'Love today', 'Big girls', 'Happy ending', we kunnen zo nog even doorgaan. Elk nummer op 'Life in cartoon motion' passeert de revue, een uitspraak die voor eens niet misplaatst is. Zijn muziek beschikt immers over een behoorlijke dosis cabaret en zelfs een snufje variété. Maar bovenal beschikt ze over hitkracht. Alles wordt van begin tot einde moeiteloos meegelipt door het Parijse publiek dat zelf ook veel in beeld komt. Tijdens 'Grace Kelly' komt hij ze zelfs even tegemoet en zingt hij spontaan een deel van het nummer in het Frans. Om de kaap van een uur te halen leent hij ook nog eens een nummer van twee hitmachines. Van Eurythmics leent hij 'Sweet dreams' en van de Jackson Five brengt hij heel overtuigend 'I want you back'. Alles is bijzonder knap gefilmd, de montage volgt mooi de sfeer van elk nummer en natuurlijk heb je dankzij de DTS 5.1 steeds het beste stoeltje in de zaal.

Naast het optreden bevat 'Live in cartoon motion' nog een hoop extra's. Video's van alle singles (inclusief die voor 'Happy ending') en akoestische versies van enkele nummers (waaronder 'Everybody's talkin' van Harry Nilsson). Akoestisch wil in dit geval zeggen Mika én een reusachtige vleugelpiano. Maar wat de extra's zeker de moeite maakt, is de documentaire 'A long way from home', een zeer uitgebreid tourverslag met bijzonder veel beeldmateriaal on- en offstage in de hoofdsteden van Europa. Tussendoor doet hij aan de camera zowat zijn hele leven uit de doeken en kom je erachter dat de titel 'A long way from home' meer slaat op zijn persoon dan op het leven op tour.

Er zit maar één dvd in het doosje, maar die is tot over de rand gevuld met interessant beeldmateriaal van deze veelbelovende figuur. Hopelijk kan je dvd-speler het aan!

Completly full and promissing ( Mika 2007)

It seems to be like a paradox. Mika is a new rising talent and nevertheless he succeeds to bring out a dvd with twice so much material as the modal pop/rock-artiest who brings out a “little” DVD.

But it doesn’t have to be a paradox because this boy has much, very, very much to offer.

The concert he gave at Paris in the Olympia at 30 June last year is on

'Live in cartoon motion'.

The venue was totally sold out until the very last inch. And it kind of should be like that, because Mika is still today for 1/3 Parisien.

Original from Beirut he lived in Paris before he arrived in London.

It explains in any case that charming English accent with which he sings.

Mika brought out only one album and yes, it sells very well but to fill up the whole set however, he has to bring in everything he’s got. Relax, Love today, Big girls', Happy ending, and so on. Each number on ‘life in cartoon motion' passes the revue, a pronouncement which is for once not out of place.

His music has a considerable amount cabaret and even a pinch of variété. But above all that it has hit-power. The Parisian public sings along every word from the beginning till the end effortless. This audience is also on screen a lot. During Grace Kelly he even approaches them a little while he sings spontaneously a part of the number in French. To obtain the cape of an hour he lends also a number of two hit machines. From Eurythmics he lends “Sweet dreams” and of the Jackson Five he brings a very persuading “I want you back”. Everything have been particularly cleverly filmed, the composing follows nicely the atmosphere of each number and thanks to the DTS 5.1 of course, you always have the best seat in the room.

Besides the concert ‘Live in cartoon motion’ contains a lot of extra's… Videos of all singles (including those for Happy ending) and acoustic versions of some numbers (among them “Everybody's talking” from Harry Nilsson). Acoustically meens in this case Mika and a giant piano. But what the extra's make certainly the effort, is the documentary “A long way from home” a very wide tour review with a lot of screen material on- and off-stage in the capitals of Europe. In between he uncovers almost his complete life. The title “A long way from home “is based more on the person then on living on tour.

There is only one dvd in the dvd-case, but it has been filled up till the edge with interesting picture material of this promising character. Hopefully your DVD_player can cope up to it!
