Suzy
Toronto Life - Jan 20/08 Jason Anderson Whether you deem him a lovable pop sprite or a shrill irritant, you have to admit that this British upstart was one of the few new artists to command wide attention last year. Canadians were especially besotted with the young piano man born Mica Penniman—his debut disc, Life in Cartoon Motion (2007), made it to number two on the album charts here, far higher than its peak at number 29 in the U.S. His singles “Grace Kelly” and “Relax (Take It Easy)” were inescapable and often hard to resist, thanks to their exuberance and retro-’70s flair (Elton John, Queen and disco are Mika’s major reference points). It remains to be seen if he’s more than a very bright flash in the pan, but he’ll be shoring up local support with his biggest Toronto show to date, his first since a very colourful and energetic Mod Club gig last March.—Jason Anderson When: Jan. 29/08 Doors 7 p.m. Send me an event reminder How Much: $39.50 in advance from Ticketmaster, Rotate This, Sonic Temple and livenation.com.
