xBillyBrownx
I'm not sure this thread belongs in this section. But I am now preparing for my final oral presentation at AS French and after hours spent discussing it with my teachers and doing general research have decided to talk about Edith Piaf. I think it's a very interesting topic and I also really like her music so I thought it might make things slightly more exciting for a change.. However now that I've chosen the topic I can't seem to find enough information about Edith Piaf: not just her biography but also her influence and significance as a French female celebrity and icon and such. So I'm hoping that some of our French (or even non-French) forum members would be able to help me out since I'm not exactly an expert on French culture and I'm sure you would know better about this topic. The rest of you can just use this as an opportunity to talk about Edith Piaf's music/life/whatever else you fancy discussing...

Mirtilla
Whenever I hear someone talking about Edith Piaf it just reminds me of my french teacher: he made us learn by heart one of her songs, Rien de Rien (or something like that:biggrin2: ): not my genre, but she's great. TheBlackQueen
I'm afraid I can't help you with your presentation, but I am so grateful you opened this thread. I LOVE HER!!! I can't say when I first heard her music, because she's been around forever in my house. I loved the film so much even when I knew what was going to happen the next minute! She was beyond words, an amazing phenomenon in every sense. I was so happy to hear one of her songs just before Mika's gigs in London, it was a blast for me:naughty:

Niki27
What info are you exactly looking for? Edith Piaf is a legend here. Not only for her music, but also because of her very sad life. (She lost her baby daughter, her great love was killed in a plane crash, she became a drug-addict,...) Loads of things to tell about her... (She lost her baby daughter, her great love was killed in a plane crash, she became a drug-addict,...) Loads of things to tell about her... Yup yup I know.. This is the kind of stuff I'm looking for. I want to know about her influence on French women? The evolution of French music and chanteuses? I know she was an avant-gardiste.. So how did she stand out? And how does she compare to French people and women of today? Thanks:thumb_yello:
Niki27
Difficult question... I really couldn't tell about her influence on today's women. I wouldnt say that influence was huge... really But it's a fact she was pretty avant-gardiste for her time: she had love affairs, she would live an out-of the line- life etc. She was also one of the first female singers to be taken seriously. Most French female artists were cabaret singers at the time, she was far more than that. And of course, her songs have marked the history of French music. There have been loads of covers etc etc. I really cant say much, I aint a Piaf specialist.... sorry.

There's a section on influences but I think it's not what you're looking for as it's on the singers she helped having a career. As for the influence on women I'm too young to be influenced by her. Actually, I don't know if a lot of women nowadays are influenced by her singers probably, because she died a long time ago. I don't know exactly where to find those informations sorry. If I ever find sth I'll tell you:wink2: When do you need to have it done?

sesil17aa
Ah, I'm probably too late? I just wanted to suggest you to search her on youtube, there are lots of marwellous videos where you can really see what kind of woman she was. I find her absolutely fascinating - her voice, her personality. She was not considered a typical beauty, but to my mind she was very beautiful. Jean Cocteau said about her that she had beaute de l'ombre - beauty of a shadow, and that when she sang it seemed like she was crying out her soul for the last time. It couldn't have been said better. I've read her autobiography and seen lots of videos and I think she was one of the most extraordinary woman in the world - I admire her so much!
