That's actually one of the historical inconsistencies that bothers me most!! The book makes it clear (and historical documents back it up) that Henry XIII specifically preferred small-breasted ladies, and in fact having small breasts was the fashion and the ideal of beauty at the time. Moreover, Henry felt so strongly about this, that he refused to consummate his marriage with Anne of Cleves because she had large breasts and he thought they were disgusting! (Historians speculate that it may also have been her complexion that put him off, but most of the quotes we have of his distaste for her concern her "slack" breasts.) Anyway, because of this, each time I see a screenshot of Scarlett in that corset with her boobs all pushed out, I get irritated at the inaccuracy of it. I cannot watch the film!" but that I couldn't tell whether the precise type of ruffs that were shown were appropriate to the time period, or, as was my suspicion, would not have come into style till 5 years later. Trying to figure out if the ruffs used starch or boning was the thing that eventually made me grow too distracted to finish watching the movie. If I could have reliably determined "oh yes, they're accurate" or "nope, that technique of making them was not yet invented," I'd not have been half so bothered. I'm glad you don't think I'm insane. The fact that it was also literally a question of only 5 years was what made it so hard to figure out! I couldn't be sure about my own timing. Nope, I study 19th c. literature, not 16th c. fashion. I just get curious about random things, and then I do a bunch of research on them. NOOOOOOOOO !!!! it's NOT like that !! neither in Waterloo, neither in St Pancras !! it has NEVER been like that, you have a whole hall to go through before you reach your friends/family/etc. waiting for you... but for the sake of the love story, the girl was on the platform... you know what ?? i didn't like the movie because of that... it was all i could think about in the end ! i don't even remember the name of it... so you're not alone, jack... I saw it at the movie without having seen l'Auberge espagnole and i didn't like it at all. And nobody was able to tell me what happened in l'Auberge espagnole, which i've seen now and liked. I know what you and Jack mean about not being able to watch the film cause it's the same for me but more for music. If i hate the singer, i can't really listen to the music and like it cause all i can think about is how much i don't like the person. Yop you're so lucky to be in Martinique i'd love to go there!
