Monie
In fact Monie, we have many past tenses. Le passé composé, l'imparfait, le passé simple et le plus-que-parfait The French tenses don't correspond to the dutch tenses in an exact way, nor to the english ones actually But to keep it short: We rarely use le passé simple. We usually stick to the other tenses. We use the imparfait to describe long-during actions in the past. We use the passé composé to describe punctual actions in the past. I was listening to Mika when the phone rang, it was my brother. J'écoutais (imparfait) Mika quand le téléphone a sonné (passé composé), c'était mon frère (imparfait) Do you understand ? Oui merci! Le Passé composé c'est pas très difficile. L'Imparfait c'est plus difficile pour moi. Mais je vais pratiquer . Notre liste d'étudients (?) grandes (?)! Sarah_loves_mika
You can say "j'ai le meilleur des (deux) mondes" but it's not really an expression ... and it's a little bit weird Maybe you can say us more about your exam it will be easier for us if we know the context of this sentence We'd say sthg like "j'ai le beurre et l'argent du beurre" I think, which litterally means "I have the butter and the money of it", as in you only have advantages, on both sides.I cant think of anything else right now. Biche, anyone? Uh huh, that's what i realised. well, i was trying to find another way to say it, but, i scrapped that idea! Thanks anyway Errr, ok another thing confusing me - i looked everywhere and its just confused me more, what's the word for pause? as in 'i paused the DVD?' etc. weird i know, but they ask us some really irrelevant things in our speaking exam.... Hello ! I've looked up in my dictionaries too but they aren't very helpful here May be you could translate "I paused the DVD" into "J'ai suspendu la lecture du DVD" which, I think, is the best way to express the meaning of your sentence (to stop for a short time). "J'ai suspendu" is the "passé composé" of the verb "suspendre". Hope it helps
Niki27
"J'ai suspendu la lecture du dvd" would indeed be correct, but a bit formal tho, no? Over here we just say "j'ai mis le dvd sur pause"
Emerald
I think you can say "j'ai mis sur pause", well at least, here we say that a lot ^^. It also works for music ^^

Crikey, that'll take me a while! Je suis trés lente. Oui, tu as bien compris. Je recherche des idées pour mon cours. Le question est 'À votre avis ......' Tu dis 'pour l'esprit' pas pour le cerveau? Je penserai que j'ai besoin de le mot plus physique pas spirituelle. Le propre culture.... real/true? thématiques - I've no idea - une traduction anglais s'il te plait. mais pas toujours.
