dcdeb
Yeah I am beginning to wonder this. I am not really a cartoon person. I mean I was when I was a kid, but I grew out of it and don't really have any desire to go back to it. There's too many good books and adult films (not porn!!) for me to bother with cartoons.Yeah for sure, give me a good book any day. One with proper joined up writing. But you know, I don't think of movies like this as "cartoons" so much. Not in the Bugs Bunny/Sponge Bob sense of cartoons, at least. This looks dark and artful and it creates a whole new world -- very much like Nightmare Before Christmas, which really was just a fabulous piece of work, on many levels. Maybe it's because I'm into the Disney thing, but I really do try to see many of the latest animated films -- James and the Giant Peach (also directed by Henry Selick) a few years back was brilliant, Ratatouille last year was terrific, and I'm still thinking about Wall-E weeks after seeing it. And any of these is far more entertaining and interesting to me than the latest rom-com with Kate Hudson or Jennifer Aniston (ho hum) or the latest action flick with Will Smith or Nicolas Cage -- so just because it's an "adult" (not porn!) movie, doesn't mean it's worth watching, either -- IMO. As far as settling down with a good book, well, you know I won't argue with you over that, bab!

I love James And The Giant Peach, saw it at the cinema with my cousin when she came over from Dublin, wow, I'd forgotten that! I would love to see Wall-E and Ratatouille, never got to see them at the cinema!

dcdeb
i am not a movie person, but i do like animations best.i don't know why... i also like to see "the making of" such movies I am HUGE movie buff, guy -- I wouldn't say I like animated films best, but I do find quite a few of them to be fascinating on many different levels. They may be intended for children on the face of things, but I find so much going on at a deeper level, things that really only adults can appreciate. Many of the Disney-Pixar movies are like that, besides being brilliant technically. I think a lot of it has to do with the story behind the film -- the writing, that is. I find the actual films intriguing artistically, visually, but they also have to have a good solid story. Which gets back to why I'm curious to see Coraline -- it was a great story, so it will be interesting to see what they've done with the film. It looks pretty awesome from what I've seen so far. So I don't mind so much if Mika talks about these kinds of films -- I do appreciate them and can relate to them much more than comic books or illustrations from children's books. Christine
I hate most modern day animations. They are too realistic to have the same vibe as old cartoons but they are not realistic enough to be believable. I'm forever distracted by the technical aspects because there is something ever so slightly off about them that I can't get lost in the fantasy. For some reason I find it easier to buy into a 2D animation like Bugs Bunny or South Park. Mika and I have absolutely nothing in common. Although oddly enough I just started a "Neil Gaiman is awesome" thread on another message board 3 days ago. (Title courtesy of Jack Violet). (well, except for braveheart, forrest gump and a few selected others) but when i watch animated movies, i really enjoy it. (and i stay awake!) i truly enjoyed iceage, ratatouille etc.. i also love to see how the whole project comes together, it's quite amazing. i also think alot of those are actually meant for adults, even if children like them. and if a movie first came out in a book, i like to read it first... then see the movie. sometimes if i really enjoyed the book, i'm disappointed with the movie. (ie davinci code) i much better at watching sitcoms. i think it's because they only last 30 min. you can ask me anything about the series "friends" and i bet i can answer all the questions

Mikas mentioned before, films like Belleville Rende-Vous and films by Hayao Miyazaki, which are excellent examples of new age animation, beautifully done 2d animation, with fantastic storylines, for adults AND children alike. Recently there were 2 adult orientated animated films, Persepolis, and Waltz with Bashir, both telling the stories of conflict in Iran and Lebanon, but both stunning in their animation and storytelling. There is so much good animation out there, you just have to know where to find it.

I think he was in the chorus, he mentioned it when he did the Jo Whiley show, and I think he said that Jack Penate was doing it at the same time, but they weren't performing in the same line up, they switched the chorus around. Yeah, I listened to the songs. But the interview sort of went in one ear and out the other. Actually, it happened on the day before I was driving up to Happikalis place for a Mikamite meetup. And so I only briefly heard it. And then on our last day tragedy struck.. Our Mika tour was cancelled.. Look at that - repressed memories.. No wonder I forgot about him being in Oliver!
