Island Records - Happy Birthday (2U)

How do you celebrate the 50th anniversary of Chris Blackwell's Island records - the rum shack that became a head shop that installed a glitterball that turned into a Joshua tree? The label that in its prime could have got a hit out of a hatstand (and probably did)? Simple: you take over the hippest record store in London (Phonica, 51 Poland Street London, W1. 020-7025 6070), install an exhibition of artefacts and memorabilia spanning five decades in the event space below, and invite a few hundred friends, family and fans to hear PJ Harvey perform.

No, U2 weren't there last night and Amy Winehouse didn't play. But Don Letts DJed (and if Letts wasn't around to turn the Beatles on to drugs, he was there to turn the Clash onto reggae, which is still the second most important moment in British music); Fairport Convention producer Joe Boyd chatted to helium-voiced poppet Mika while musicians, managers and moi marvelled at the exhibits that draped the walls.

Alongside the photographs (how young were Free when they started?! Oh, yeah - between 15 and 17. Are you listening Kasabian?) and freestanding artworks (including one of six Trabants the label bought for £2,500, including postage, to publicise Achtung Baby) was a vitrine full of the bottom drawers of countless Island staff: backstage passes from endless-sounding U2 tours (a pair of Bono's furry Fly boots nearby); the Akai drum machine DJ Shadow used on his still scintillating "Endtroducing..." and away in one corner - fitting, that - handwritten lyrics to "Way To Blue" and the guitar Nick Drake played on Bryter Layter. (It's labelled as a Martin D28, although it looked to me like a 00028 - more in keeping with the small-bodied Guild he's pictured playing on the cover.)

And for the birthday gift from them to you that keeps on giving, the exhibition is staying put for a month, so if you've any interest in the cultural life of the last 50 years, or you simply want to breeze around one of the barmier basements in London right now, head to Phonica.

what's "poppet"?

puppy who sings pop?

That's as good a definition as any :roftl:

per wikipedia

"The word poppet is an older spelling of puppet, from the Middle English popet, meaning a small child or doll. Poppet is also a chiefly English term of endearment."

It's usually used for small girls, although my neighbours named one of their cats "Poppet" :thumb_yello:

Imbruglia parties at Island bash

Natalie Imbruglia was among a host of stars at a glitzy party to celebrate Island Records 50th birthday party.

The Torn singer looked laid back but stylish in leather trousers and a lace jacket as she arrived at the bash at Phonica Records in London's Soho, and then partied on into the night at the after party at 33 Portland Place.

Chart stars Mika and The Feeling also attended the event to celebrate Island's half century, while producer and DJ Mark Ronson, Juliette Lewis and Sophie Ellis-Bextor were spotted at the after party.

That reporter hasn't listened to Blue Eyes or Toy Boy yet.

Besides... Mika has NEVER sounded like he's on helium!
