Γεννήθηκε στον Λίβανο, μεγάλωσε στο Παρίσι, το Λονδίνο υπήρξε ένας ξεχωριστός σταθμός στη ζωή του και αποφάσισε την περίοδο του lockdown να μείνει στην Αθήνα. Το πρώτο του ολοκληρωμένο στούντιο άλμπουμ «Life in Cartoon Motion» κυκλοφορεί το 2007, πουλώντας περισσότερα από 8 εκατομμύρια αντίτυπα παγκοσμίως και λαμβάνοντας υποψηφιότητα για βραβείο Grammy. Το κοινό τον έχει απολαύσει μέσω των τραγουδιών, αλλά και της παρουσίας του στην τηλεόραση, μια και το 2022 συμπαρουσίασε τη Eurovision μαζί με την Ιταλίδα τραγουδίστρια Laura Pausini και τον Ιταλό παρουσιαστή Alessandro Cattelan. Η μουσική του έχει την ικανότητα να μας κάνει να χαμογελάμε, να βλέπουμε πιο ρομαντικά τις καταστάσεις. Άλλωστε, το μυστικό του MIKA για καλή ζωή είναι να μετατρέπει όλες τις άσχημες στιγμές σε κάτι -έστω και λίγο- πιο χρήσιμο. Ο κόσμος του είναι γοητευτικά πολύχρωμος, σχεδόν ουτοπικός, όμως δεν έμοιαζε πάντα έτσι. «Ήμουν το χαζό παιδί που δεν μπορούσε να διαβάσει, να γράψει, δεν ήμουν καλός στην ορθογραφία, ακόμα δυσκολεύομαι. Ήμουν το παιδί που με έδιωξαν από το σχολείο και για ένα διάστημα σταμάτησα να μιλάω». Ένα απόγευμα παρέα με τον MIKA Ώρα Ελλάδος, 6:00 το απόγευμα. Ώρα Αγγλίας, 4:00 το μεσημέρι. Ο MIKA μόλις συνδέθηκε στο Zoom. Φοράει μια μπεζ polo μπλούζα με κοντά μανίκια, βρίσκεται στο σπίτι του στο Λονδίνο, πίσω αχνοφαίνεται ένα λευκό πιάνο και μου χαρίζει ένα χαμόγελο από την πρώτη κιόλας στιγμή. Έχουμε στη διάθεσή μας τριάντα ολόκληρα διαδικτυακά λεπτά για να γνωριστούμε, ίσως να ανταλλάξουμε απόψεις και να ανακαλύψω περισσότερο το μέρος που το μυαλό του MIKA πάντοτε ανθίζει, όπως λέει και στο νέο του άλμπουμ. Χαίρομαι πολύ που σήμερα θα μιλήσω μαζί σας! Είστε ένας δημιουργός που έδωσε άλλον αέρα στην ποπ κουλτούρα, όσα χρόνια και αν περάσουν, θα χορεύουμε τα τραγούδια σας. Πώς αισθάνεστε που ανήκετε στο πάνθεον των ποπ καλλιτεχνών; Είναι τιμή μου να μπορώ να νιώθω έτσι. Πιστεύω πως όλο αυτό οφείλεται στο ότι κάθε τι που μοιράζομαι είναι φτιαγμένο με πολλή αγάπη και προσωπική φροντίδα. Είναι “homemade”. Κάθε τραγούδι έχει γραφτεί στο πιάνο που βλέπεις πίσω μου. Η αδερφή μου και οι φίλοι μου με βοηθάνε στον σχεδιασμό γραφικών, δίνοντας μια ακόμα καλλιτεχνική πινελιά στη μουσική μου. Η όλη διαδικασία είναι τόσο οικεία, εμπλέκομαι άμεσα σε ό,τι και αν κάνω, το αφήνω να εξελιχθεί, δεν το απορρίπτω. Νομίζω ότι αυτός είναι ένας από τους λόγους για τους οποίους κάποια από τα τραγούδια μου χαρακτηρίζονται πλέον ως διαχρονικά. Ποτέ δεν προσπάθησα να τα πιέσω, να τα αναγκάσω να ακολουθήσουν τη μόδα. Τους επέτρεπα να «μεγαλώσουν» όπως θέλουν. Σε μερικές ημέρες θα βρίσκεστε στην Αθήνα για μία Rockwave νύχτα, στο Θέατρο Λυκαβηττού, έναν χρόνο μετά την εμφάνισή σας στο Rockwave Festival. Πώς αποφασίσατε να επισκεφτείτε ξανά τη χώρα μας; Ήταν περίεργο το ότι εμφανίστηκα πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα το 2023, ενώ έχω διαμέρισμα στην Αθήνα εδώ και δέκα χρόνια. Η χώρα σας είναι μέρος της ζωής μου, έχω φίλους εδώ, ο σύντροφός μου είναι μισός Έλληνας -και πολύ περήφανος για αυτό. Την περίοδο του lockdown έμεινα στην Αθήνα, υπάρχει μια προσωπική σχέση με αυτόν τον τόπο. Μου αρέσει να φέρνω στην Ελλάδα τη μουσική μου και όταν μου ζήτησαν να έρθω με όλη την παραγωγή, ειλικρινά ενθουσιάστηκα. Αν το κοινό είχε εντυπωσιαστεί την προηγούμενη χρονιά, φέτος ίσως δεν είναι προετοιμασμένο για αυτό που θα ζήσει. Θα είναι το πρώτο μου headline show εδώ, θα υπάρχουν πολλές εκπλήξεις και μερικές θα είναι ελληνικές. Δεν μπορώ όμως να πω τίποτα περισσότερο, θα πρέπει να περιμένετε μέχρι την ημέρα του live. Πρόσφατα κυκλοφόρησε το νέο σας άλμπουμ, το οποίο αντιλαμβάνομαι πως εξυμνεί την αγάπη και τη σημασία του να ζούμε ελεύθερα. Μιλήστε μας λίγο για αυτό... Είναι πολύ σημαντικό το ότι ήθελα να κάνω ένα άλμπουμ στα γαλλικά, κάτι που τελικά τρομοκράτησε σχεδόν τους πάντες. Η αγορά ζητάει μουσική στα αγγλικά, ώστε να την ακούν όλοι, όμως εγώ ήξερα ότι πρέπει να γίνει στα γαλλικά, φαινόταν πιο διασκεδαστικό. Τι νόημα έχει άλλωστε να είσαι ελεύθερος, αν δεν κάνεις τις επιλογές που θες; Αυτό το άλμπουμ είναι ασυνήθιστο, ρομαντικό, είναι ένα χαρούμενο χάος. Ένα από τα τραγούδια που ξεχώρισα ήταν το “Jane Birkin”, στο οποίο λέτε πως δεν είστε εντάξει στα blue jeans και ονειρεύεστε μία αγάπη Birkin. Θα μπορούσατε να μου εξηγήσετε περισσότερο αυτούς του στίχους; Χαίρομαι που αναφέρεσαι στο αυτό το τραγούδι, γιατί ειλικρινά πιστεύω ότι είναι το ιδανικό παράδειγμα για να περιγράψω τη φιλοσοφία του άλμπουμ. Μετά όμως εμφανίζεται το Παρίσι, εκεί που γνωρίζεις την τέχνη, το ταλέντο και κυρίως το πώς να παρουσιάζεις τον εαυτό σου. Μαθαίνεις να ντύνεσαι, να έχεις τη δική σου αισθητική. Και ύστερα, έρχεται με φόρα το Λονδίνο. Καταλαβαίνεις τι σημαίνει ανταγωνισμός, τι είναι πραγματική έκφραση και τι στιλ. Είμαι απολύτως ένα μείγμα αυτών των τριών και δεν μπορώ να αφαιρέσω κανένα. Δεν μπορώ να μείνω σε ένα μέρος, δεν θα μπορέσω ποτέ και αυτό με κάνει πολύ προσαρμοστικό και ίσως περίεργο. Το όνομά σας, η μουσική σας, είναι σχεδόν πάντα συνυφασμένα με μια πολύ θετική ενέργεια. Έχω τη δυνατότητα να μετατρέπω τις δύσκολες καταστάσεις σε πιο ποιητικές. Έχεις σκεφτεί ότι μιλάμε πολύ συχνά για το πώς οργανώνουμε την ευτυχία; Όλοι έχουμε ένα είδος «συστήματος ευτυχίας». Ξεκινάμε από το μηδέν, ίσως φτάσουμε στο δέκα και αν είμαστε τυχεροί μπορεί να το ξεπεράσουμε. Φυσικά, υπάρχει και το μείον, το σημείο που αισθανόμαστε έντονη στεναχώρια, θυμό, ενδεχομένως και τα δύο μαζί. Κατά τη γνώμη μου αυτό είναι μια πρακτική που την υιοθετούμε όλοι από μικρή ηλικία, απλά με διαφορετικές συνιστώσες. Η αξία μας είναι ανάλογη των βαθμών στο σχολείο, της εξωτερικής εμφάνισης και των φίλων που έχουμε. Όλα αυτά συνθέτουν μια σύγκριση, η οποία μας επιτρέπει να αντιληφθούμε τι σημάνει ευτυχία. Τα δικά σας παιδικά χρόνια πώς ήταν; Είχα αρκετά προβλήματα μικρός. Με έδιωξαν από το σχολείο, δέχτηκα ψυχολογική κακοποίηση από τον δάσκαλό μου, σε σημείο που τελικά σταμάτησα να μιλάω. Ήμουν οκτώ χρονών και δεν μπορούσα να διαβάσω, να γράψω και κάπως έτσι κλείστηκα σε έναν δικό μου κόσμο. Ένιωθα ότι δεν είχα καμία αξία, βρισκόμουν στο μείον 10. Τι μπορούσα όμως να κάνω ως παιδί, μέσα σε όλη αυτή την κατάσταση; Τελικά, ευτυχώς που με έδιωξαν για έναν χρόνο από το σχολείο. Τότε έμαθα μουσική μαζί με τη μαμά μου και μια δασκάλα πιάνου! Το παιδί που δεν τα κατάφερνε στην τάξη, κατάφερε και δούλεψε στην όπερα, τραγουδώντας με τον μαέστρο Τζορτζ Σόλτι και τον Ντέιβιντ Χόκνεϊ. Προφανώς όλο αυτό δεν ήταν κάτι απλό, ούτε εύκολο. Έκανα εξάσκηση κάθε μέρα. Η μητέρα μου ήταν πλέον η προπονήτριά μου. Για ώρες, κάναμε πρόβες ξανά και ξανά. Αυτό συμβαίνει μέχρι σήμερα, έχω ακόμα αυτή την πειθαρχία, όμως θέλω να αλλάξω το σύστημα αξιών μου, να βρω μια διαφορετική γραμμή αυτοεκτίμησης. Έχετε δηλώσει πως δεν σας αρέσουν οι ταμπέλες γενικότερα, όχι μόνο σε ό,τι αφορά τη σεξουαλικότητα. Ποια είναι η οπτική σας; Θεωρώ ότι πρέπει να είμαστε πολύ προσεκτικοί στο πώς επιλέγουμε να κατηγοριοποιήσουμε οτιδήποτε, για αυτό δεν μου αρέσουν οι ταμπέλες. Αυτός ο τρόπος σκέψης μου συζητήθηκε πολύ έντονα στην αρχή της καριέρας μου, κυρίως με φρικτά σχόλια. Τώρα όμως τα πράγματα είναι αλλιώς. Τα περισσότερα άτομα της δικής σου γενιάς και οι νεότεροι δέχονται πλέον τον κόσμο για αυτό που είναι, πολλά έγιναν επιτέλους κανονικότητα, όχι θέμα συζήτησης. Υπάρχουν βέβαια ακόμα εκείνοι που βγάζουν το μίσος τους και αναπαράγουν τις προκαταλήψεις και τα στερεότυπα με τα οποία μεγάλωσαν. Το 2024 μέχρι στιγμής είναι μια αρκετά «γεμάτη» χρόνια για εσάς. Πώς είστε μέχρι στιγμής; Είναι μια ενδιαφέρουσα χρονιά γιατί αυτή τη στιγμή κάνω παραστάσεις σε 4 χώρες και 4 γλώσσες, κυκλοφορώ νέο άλμπουμ στα αγγλικά, γενικώς συμβαίνουν πολλά. Όμως όλα αυτά με κάνουν ελεύθερο. Πολύ απασχολημένο, σίγουρα, αλλά πολύ ελεύθερο. Σχεδιάζω όμως να ξεκουραστώ με μία δεύτερη επίσκεψή μου στην Ελλάδα και συγκεκριμένα πηγαίνοντας στα Ζαγοροχώρια. Τα λατρεύω! Τέλος, η αγαπημένη μου ερώτηση: Αν η Ελλάδα ήταν τραγούδι, ποιο θα ήταν; Χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη, το “Happy Ending”. The whole process is so familiar, I'm directly involved in whatever I'm doing, I let it evolve, I don't reject it. I think that's one of the reasons why some of my songs are now considered timeless. I never tried to push them, force them to follow fashion. I allowed them to "grow" as they wanted. In a few days you will be in Athens for a Rockwave night, at the Lycabettus Theatre, one year after your appearance at the Rockwave Festival. How did you decide to visit our country again? It was strange that I appeared for the first time in Greece in 2023, while I have had an apartment in Athens for ten years. Your country is part of my life, I have friends here, my partner is half Greek - and very proud of it. During the lockdown I stayed in Athens, there is a personal relationship with this place. I like to bring my music to Greece and when they asked me to come with the whole production, I was honestly excited. If the audience was impressed last year, this year they may not be prepared for what they will experience. It will be my first headline show here, there will be many surprises and some will be Greek. But I can't say anything more, you'll have to wait until the day of the live. You recently released your new album, which I understand celebrates love and the importance of living freely. Tell us a little bit about that… It's very important that I wanted to make an album in French, which ended up scaring almost everyone. The market is asking for music in English so everyone can hear it, but I knew it should be done in French, it seemed more fun. What's the point of being free if you don't make the choices you want? This album is unusual, romantic, it's a happy mess. One of the songs that stood out to me was "Jane Birkin", in which you say that you are not okay in blue jeans and you dream of a Birkin love. Could you explain these verses to me more? I'm glad you mention this song, because I honestly think it's the perfect example to describe the philosophy of the album. When I say I'm not okay with blue jeans, I'm talking about any time we feel like we don't fit. When we express ourselves, we become exaggerated and when we don't speak, we are strangely quiet. After all, how should we be? Why can't we just do what we feel? All this awkwardness translates into my song as blue jean. That's why I dream of a love a la Birkin. Jane Birkin has always fascinated me and I think the reason is because of how sensual yet elegant she was. Free, extremely alternative, avant-garde and at the same time anti-snob. A combination of such different things. The idea of love a la Birkin is the kind of person who is not ashamed to fall in love, as in “Je t'aime... moi non plus”. After all, the reason we keep making music, as conductor Barenboim said, is because we can discuss things that cannot be expressed in any other way, we cannot find the right words. Words will always be polarized, but music not so much. You were born in Lebanon and then shared your life in Paris and London. How do you think these places affected your mindset, the way you see the world? I'm a combination of all of these and I love it. Lebanon has grandmothers, politics, war, the east, destabilization, it leaves you with a melancholy. It is the place of beauty and contradictions. But then Paris appears, where you know art, talent and above all how to present yourself. You learn to dress, to have your own aesthetic. And then, along comes London. You understand what competition means, what real expression is and what style is. I am absolutely a mix of these three and can't remove any. I can't stay in one place, never will be able to and that makes me very adaptable and maybe weird. Your name, your music, is almost always intertwined with a very positive energy. What is the secret of the good life? To turn all the bad things into something a little more useful. I always talk about music as a kind of poetic resistance. In France we call it “artistiquement engagé”, an idea of political and human importance, a different kind of commitment. Every artist, every person, expresses it in the way they want and I think this is my secret for my playful character. I have the ability to turn difficult situations into more poetic ones. Have you thought that we talk too often about how we organize happiness? We all have a kind of "happiness system". We start at zero, maybe get to ten, and if we're lucky we might get past that. Of course, there is also the minus, the point where we feel intense sadness, anger, possibly both. In my opinion this is a practice that we all adopt from a young age, just with different components. Our worth is proportional to our grades in school, our outward appearance, and the friends we have. All this makes up a comparison, which allows us to understand what happiness means. What was your childhood like? I had a lot of problems growing up. I was kicked out of school, psychologically abused by my teacher, to the point where I finally stopped talking. I was eight years old and I couldn't read or write and somehow I was closed in a world of my own. I felt like I had no value, I was at minus 10. But what could I do as a child, in this whole situation? In the end, luckily I was kicked out of school for a year. Then I learned music with my mom and a piano teacher! The child who failed in the classroom succeeded and worked in the opera, singing with conductor George Solti and David Hockney. Obviously, all this was not something simple, nor easy. I practiced every day. My mother was now my coach. For hours, we rehearsed over and over. This is still happening today, I still have that discipline, but I want to change my value system, find a different line of self-esteem. You've stated that you don't like labels in general, not just when it comes to sexuality. What is your perspective? I think we have to be very careful how we choose to categorize anything, which is why I don't like labels. This way of thinking of me was discussed very strongly early in my career, mostly with horrible comments. But now things are different. Most people of your generation and younger people now accept the world for what it is, a lot has finally become normal, not a matter of discussion. Of course, there are still those who vent their hatred and reproduce the prejudices and stereotypes they grew up with. 2024 has been quite a "full" year for you so far. How are you doing so far? It's an interesting year because right now I'm doing shows in 4 countries and 4 languages, I'm releasing a new album in English, in general a lot is happening. But all this makes me free. Very busy, sure, but very free. But I am planning to rest with a second visit to Greece, specifically going to Zagorochoria. I love them! Finally, my favorite question: If Greece were a song, what would it be? Without a second thought, the "Happy Ending". I think it's a common secret that nobody likes sad songs more, especially when it comes to love, than the Greeks. Mika, Ihre größten Hits sind „Relax, take it easy“ und „Grace Kelly“. Nervt es, die Songs bei jedem Ihrer Auftritte zu spielen? Mika: Nein, ich mag es, weil ich die Lieder verändere. Sie entwickeln sich mit der Zeit. Man kann sie nicht dauerhaft in der Form singen, wie ich es gemacht habe, als ich sie geschrieben habe. Da würde ich verrückt werden. Mika: Am Anfang schauen sich alle Zuschauer erst mal an. Es sind Menschen aus der ganzen Welt dabei: alle möglichen Charaktere, alle Altersklassen, von Hipstern bis hin zu top gestylten Leuten. Die mustern sich alle gegenseitig – und dann geht es los: Ich nenne es eine gefährliche, spielerische Energie. Die Leute lassen los, genau wie ich. Man versteht es, wenn man meine Show sieht. Haben Sie schon mal ein Konzert in einem Schlossgarten gespielt? Mika: Ich habe schon in Schlossgärten in ganz Europa gespielt. In Deutschland bin ich meistens in Berlin oder München aufgetreten. Deshalb ist es toll, dass ich dieses Mal in eine ganz andere Gegend des Landes reisen kann. Ich bin extrem gespannt. Sie waren also noch nie in unserer Region? Mika: Ich war schon in Frankfurt und auch in der Nähe von Heidelberg, aber wenn man sein ganzes Leben auf Tour ist, ist es wichtig, dass man neugierig nach neuen Orten bleibt. I love "Origin of Love," which is funny because I sing it while not being single. It's about love, religion, and it's a mix of different styles. What I love is that it has found its place in my concerts, even if you've never heard it before. At the latest, by the end of the song, the audience is fully engaged, and that's the beauty: "Origin of Love" is a song that one discovers as a listener and then develops in one's daily life. How can one imagine your concerts? Mika: At first, all the spectators look at each other. There are people from all over the world: all kinds of characters, all ages, from hipsters to high-end style people. They all look at each other – and then it starts: it's a dangerous and playful energy. People let go, just like me. You only understand it when you see my show. Have you ever played a concert in a castle garden? Mika: I have played in castle gardens all over Europe. In Germany, I usually performed in Berlin or Munich. That's why it's great that I can travel to a completely different region of the country this time. I am extremely excited! So, you have never been in our region? Mika: I have been to Frankfurt and also near Heidelberg, but when you tour all your life, it is important to stay curious about new places. Mika: Since I write my songs on the piano, there is a mix of different style elements from my background. I come from many different cultures, I studied classical music, and I started singing professionally at the age of eight. I listened to music of all styles, from African to Brazilian to electro. I think the mix of different elements resembles the style of 1970s pop music. However, we don't hear a piano in all your songs. Mika: I always try to make sure my music isn't too edited. Some songs don't have any piano at all in the final version. But they are written on the piano. It's important to consider the origin of a song. The peculiarity of pop music from the 1960s to the 1990s is that it tells stories. You can build an emotional story with a tension curve. I like the depth you can go into. For someone like me, it's appropriate – with my musical and cultural background, it makes sense. It's funny because when I'm on stage, I don't often play the piano at all. The whole set is much more rock, and we dance. It's a strange mix, but the sound of the 1970s gives you the opportunity to open it all up, towards electro, for example. Songs like "Lollipop" or "We are golden" spread good cheer. Are you a positive person? Mika: I think I am a resilient person. I am dangerously resilient. I find things and play with them like a cat would. That's my sense of humor. But it's also my survival mechanism: finding that little bit of magic in a dark situation, playing with light and shadow. That's the secret of my positive attitude. About the 2019 album "My Name is Michael Holbrook" that bears your name, you said at the time that you wanted to move away from past pain and move towards something hopeful. Do you still think that? Mika: That goes back to some difficult years. I was raised by my mother from the beginning. I was expelled from school and had a lot of problems: I was eight years old and couldn't read or write. I stopped talking – for about nine months. My mother took care of me like I was a project. We were five children, but she took care of me and thought about what we could do. Then my mother said: "You're not going to school for a year." I told her it was illegal. She didn't care; it wouldn't have done anything to send me to school. I didn't speak, read, or write. I was sad and isolated myself from the outside world. My mother sent me to the park. I had to play there, and the rest of the day, I had to make music. She organized lessons with a piano and music teacher and trained me hour by hour every day. What did that do to you? Mika: What she did at the time: she established another value system because the school value system didn't work. My mother showed me how not to feel worthless and shaped me as a musician. It saved me... We worked together until the end, but when I started writing this album, she became ill. The album was written while she was suffering from a brain tumor. I saw the person I had worked with all my life change. Part of the brain shut down. It is a very difficult situation for anyone who has to experience it, especially if you are recording your album. I had to use this album to pretend it wouldn't happen to make peace with the final relationship with my mother. That was the process of this album – and it wasn't easy. But she was right, as always. You have already been seen on television in "The Voice France" and "X Factor Italy," in Italy you had your own TV show, and in 2022 you hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin. What do you like about television? Mika: Television was part of my decision not to close myself off. I always hated it when something unimportant was picked and talked about in the media. But when I started going on TV and talking about my perspective on music, I realized that it didn't reduce me to something, on the contrary: it broadened me. It enriched my music. Il s'agit d'amour, de religion et c'est un mélange de styles différents. Ce que j'aime, c'est qu'elle a trouvé sa place dans mes concerts, même si vous ne l'avez jamais entendu auparavant. Au plus tard à la fin de la chanson, les spectateurs suivent pleinement et c'est ça la beauté: « Origin of Love » est une chanson que l'on découvre en tant qu'auditeur et que l'on développe ensuite dans sa vie de tous les jours. Comment peut-on imaginer vos concerts ? Mika : Au début, tous les spectateurs se regardent. Il y a des gens du monde entier : toutes sortes de personnages, tous les âges, des hipsters aux personnes de style haut de gamme. Ils se regardent tous les uns les autres – et puis c'est parti : c’est une énergie dangereuse et ludique. Les gens lâchent prise, tout comme moi. On comprend seulement quand on voit mon spectacle. Avez-vous déjà joué un concert dans un jardin du château ? Mika : J'ai déjà joué dans les jardins des châteaux dans toute l'Europe. En Allemagne, je me suis généralement produit à Berlin ou à Munich. C'est pourquoi c'est génial que je puisse voyager cette fois dans une toute autre région du pays. Je suis extrêmement excité ! Vous n'avez donc jamais été dans notre région ? Mika : J'étais déjà à Francfort et aussi près de Heidelberg, mais quand vous êtes en tournée toute votre vie, il est important de rester curieux de nouveaux endroits. J'essaie toujours de l'obtenir, car on ne peut pas être la même personne à tous les endroits. Il faut créer une interaction avec ses auditeurs. Il y a une nouvelle énergie à chaque endroit et j'ai hâte de la découvrir à Schwetzingen. Avez-vous le temps de voir la région lorsque vous vous présentez à Schwetzingen ? Mika : J'essaie toujours de regarder quelque chose, sinon ça devient déprimant. Le secret pour être triste en tournée n'est rien à regarder. Le meilleur plan est de savoir : où se trouve le meilleur café, où est le meilleur endroit pour une bière et quel est le meilleur musée ? Et bien sûr : qui me sert ma nourriture après le spectacle ? Je suis obsédé par le fait d'aller dîner après mon apparition. Cela ressemble à un bon plan. Mika : Parfois, je pense même déjà sur scène : je suis tellement excité, je veux aller manger quelque chose maintenant (rires). La particularité de la musique pop des années 1960 aux années 1990 est qu'elle raconte des histoires. Vous pouvez construire une histoire émotionnelle avec une courbe de tension. J'aime la profondeur dans laquelle on peut aller. Pour quelqu'un comme moi, c'est approprié - avec mon arrière-plan musical et culturel, cela a du sens. Est-ce que tu penses ça ? Mika : Cela remonte à quelques années difficiles. J'ai été éduqué par ma mère dès le début. J'ai été expulsé de l'école et j'ai eu beaucoup de problèmes : j'avais huit ans et je ne pouvais ni lire ni écrire. J'ai arrêté de parler – pendant environ neuf mois. Ma mère s'est occupée de moi comme si j'étais un projet. Nous étions cinq enfants, mais elle s'est occupée de moi et a réfléchi à ce que nous pouvions faire. Puis ma mère a dit : « Tu ne vas pas à l'école pendant un an. » Je lui ai dit que c'était illégal. Elle s'en fichait, cela n'aurait rien fait de m'envoyer à l'école. Je n'ai pas parlé, je n'ai rien lu ou écrit. J'étais triste et je me suis isolé du monde extérieur. Ma mère m'a envoyé au parc. Je devais jouer là-bas et le reste de la journée, je devais faire de la musique. Elle m'a organisé des cours avec un professeur de piano et de musique et m'a entraîné heure après heure tous les jours. Qu'est-ce que ça t'a fait ? Mika : Ce qu'elle a fait à l'époque : elle a établi un autre système de valeurs car le système de valeurs de l'école n'a pas fonctionné. Ma mère m'a montré comment ne pas se sentir sans valeur et m'a façonné en tant que musicien. Ça m'a sauvé… Nous avons travaillé ensemble jusqu'à la fin, mais quand j'ai commencé à écrire cet album, elle est tombée malade. L'album a été écrit alors qu'elle souffrait d'une tumeur au cerveau. J'ai vu la personne avec qui j'ai travaillé toute ma vie changer. Une partie du cerveau s'est éteinte. C'est une situation très difficile pour tous ceux qui doivent en faire l'expérience, surtout si vous enregistrez votre album. J'ai dû utiliser cet album pour faire comme si cela n'arriverait pas pour faire la paix avec la relation finale avec ma mère. C'était le processus de cet album – et ce n'était pas facile. Mais elle avait raison comme toujours. Vous avez déjà été vu à la télévision à « The Voice France » et « X Factor Italy », en Italie, vous avez eu votre propre émission de télévision et en 2022, vous avez animé le Concours Eurovision de la chanson à Turin. Qu'est-ce que vous aimez à la télévision ? Mika : La télévision a fait part de ma décision de ne pas me fermer. J'ai toujours détesté quand quelque chose sans importance était choisi et parlé dans les médias. Με την ανακοίνωση της συναυλίας στο θέατρο Λυκαβηττού ως headliner, ήταν δεδομένο ότι θα επιστρέψουμε. Φτάνοντας στο χώρο του θεάτρου, η αλήθεια είναι πως η αίσθηση ήταν κάπως αποκαρδιωτική, αφού πολύς λίγος κόσμος βρισκόταν ήδη εκεί. Ναι, ήταν καθημερινή, ναι έχουμε πλέον πάρα πολλές συναυλίες σε αυτή τη “θερμή” σεζόν, κι επιπλέον το εισιτήριο ήταν αρκετά τσιμπημένο σε τιμή, κάτι που προφανώς λειτούργησε ανασταλτικά στην προσέλευση του κοινού. Πέρα απο τον πυρήνα των φανατικών οπαδών του Mika που είχαν πιάσει απο νωρίς το χώρο μπρος στο κάγκελο, με φανταχτερό ρουχισμό, ακόμη και κάποια υπερμεγέθη λουλούδια ανα χείρας, το υπόλοιπο θέατρο ήταν μισοάδειο, με διάσπαρτο κόσμο στις κερκίδες. Με μια κάποια καθυστέρηση περίπου μισής ώρας που έφερε στην παρέα μας λίγο ακόμη κόσμο, το “Origin Of Love” άνοιξε τη βραδιά. Man wehrt sich und versteckt sich, man stößt alle weg.“ Doch irgendwann entdeckte er, dass er das Fernsehen benutzen konnte, um „über die Musik, über musikalische Geschichten und auch über meine Geschichte“ zu sprechen. „Das bedeutete plötzlich, dass ich einen direkten Weg hatte, mit den Menschen zu kommunizieren.“ Mika galt in der Schule als Außenseiter und zögerte lange, sich zu seiner Homosexualität zu bekennen. Nun aber spürte er durch die TV-Shows eine ganz neue Freiheit, die ihm ermöglichte, all die unterschiedlichen Einflüsse, die ihn geprägt hatten, auf kreative Weise umzusetzen. „Plötzlich trat ich in Philharmonien und mit Sinfonieorchestern auf“, erzählt der Sänger. „Ich glaube, das wäre nicht möglich gewesen, wenn ich mich nicht dafür geöffnet hätte, zu sagen: Okay, ich bestehe aus all diesen verschiedenen Kulturen, und ich werde zeigen, dass all diese Kulturen zusammengehören.“ Dass der kommerzielle Erfolg dabei eine nachrangige Rolle spielt, nimmt man dem Künstler ohne Weiteres ab. Sein jüngstes, im vergangenen Dezember erschienenes Album trägt den Titel „Que ta tête fleurisse toujours“ (Möge dein Kopf immer blühen) und ist sein erstes, das er komplett in französischer Sprache aufgenommen hat. Ihm ist klar, dass eine englische Version des Albums sich international besser verkaufen würde. „Ich könnte viermal so viel verkaufen und die Streams vervierfachen, wenn ich die englische Version mache“, sagt er, „aber sieht es wie ein kommerzielles Projekt aus, was nie mein Leitfaden gewesen ist. Aber ironischerweise ist genau diese nicht-kommerzielle Vision und der Entscheidungsprozess das Geheimnis für die Langlebigkeit meiner Karriere gewesen.“ Dazu passt sein Selbstverständnis als Pop-Musiker: „Ich möchte ein alternativer Nischen-Pop-Künstler sein, und ich weiß, dass das ein Widerspruch in sich selbst ist. Aber ich weiß, dass es interessanter ist und mich als Songwriter und Musiker glücklicher macht.“ The bird of paradise; hits like “Relax, take it easy” and “Grace Kelly” made Mika a star. "He's a huge talent and has extraordinary potential," he enthused in an interview with the GA about the extraordinary voice and glamorous appearance from Switzerland. The 40-year-old knows his way around the pop business. Under the name Mika, the Lebanese-British pop star, born in Beirut, had an extraordinary start to his career early on: his debut album "Life in Cartoon Motion" was released in 2007 and immediately went to the top of the British charts. The hit "Relax, Take It Easy" was featured on it and of course "Grace Kelly", which Mika will certainly also perform at his upcoming concert at the Bonn KunstRasen (July 29). Oh, yes, the ESC. Mika has even hosted it himself. Together with Laura Pausini and Alessandro Cattelan in 2022 in Turin. Mika loves glamorous shows like the ESC, where artists get the opportunity to celebrate their performance "surrounded by 60 cameras and up to 20,000 people." At the same time, he regrets that these shows are a dying breed. "There aren't really any big music shows anymore," he complains. "Even the MTV Video Music Awards are nothing compared to what they used to be. It's no longer an event." An authentic European There are probably not many artists who could represent the European idea of the ESC more authentically than this singer. After his early successes, Mika, who grew up in Paris and London, became a career maker of European stature himself. He was a judge on the Italian version of "X Factor" for two years, then sat on the jury of the French version of "The Voice" for five years until 2019. And he even had his own TV show in Italy. He is also a TV star in England: There you can see him on Channel 4 together with piano superstar Lang Lang as a judge on the talent show "The Piano". The competition is looking for the best amateur pianists in the United Kingdom in four extraordinary locations - London St. Pancras, Birmingham New Street, Leeds and Glasgow Central stations. While the amateur pianists share their stories and music with the audience in the middle of the busy stations, their playing is judged by Mika and Lang Lang. The best amateur pianists then meet for the grand finale at the Royal Festival Hall in London. In his shows, Mika, who speaks fluent French, Italian and Spanish as well as English, lives the European idea. "For me, England is part of Europe. I really mean that," he emphasises. He sees Brexit as a mistake and describes it on a political level as "Britain's amputation from Europe". In cultural terms, however, England and Europe are still "one continent". When he was younger, Mika had a rather distant relationship with the medium of television, which today is a natural part of his self-image as an artist. "I was very reserved when it came to television," he says, "and I was very reserved when it came to interviews in general." He isolated himself, but that didn't stop the media from forming an opinion about him. Mika: "And what do you do then? You defend yourself and hide, you push everyone away." But at some point he discovered that he could use television to talk "about music, about musical stories and also about my story". “It suddenly meant I had a direct way to communicate with people.” Mika was considered an outsider at school and hesitated for a long time to admit that he was gay. But now, through the TV shows, he felt a whole new freedom, which enabled him to creatively express all the different influences that had shaped him. "Suddenly I was performing in philharmonic orchestras and with symphony orchestras," says the singer. "I don't think that would have been possible if I hadn't opened myself up to saying: OK, I consist of all these different cultures, and I'm going to show that all these cultures belong together." It is easy to believe that commercial success plays a secondary role in this. His latest album, released last December, is called "Que ta tête fleurisse toujours" (May your head always bloom) and is the first one he recorded entirely in French. He knows that an English version of the album would sell better internationally. "I could sell four times as much and quadruple the streams if I did the English version," he says, "but it looks like a commercial project, which has never been my guiding principle. But ironically, it is precisely this non-commercial vision and decision-making process that has been the secret to the longevity of my career." This fits with his self-image as a pop musician: "I want to be an alternative niche pop artist, and I know that's a contradiction in terms. Der libanesisch-britische Sänger mit einem Faible für ständig wechselnde, oft farbenfrohe und mitunter glitzernde Kostüme liebt das Spiel mit der Selbstinszenierung, das mit seinen poppig-perlenden Songs einhergeht und ihn in den vergangenen 17 Jahren vor allem in Frankreich und Italien überaus populär gemacht hat. Kein Wunder, war er dort schließlich über Jahre hinweg als Juror für diverse Casting-Formate tätig, moderierte eine eigene Unterhaltungsshow und 2022 auch den Eurovision Song Contest in Turin. In Deutschland hat Mika hingegen nie so richtig Fuß fassen können. Zu seinem Konzert in Bonn waren auf jeden Fall nur knapp 2000 Fans zum KunstRasen gekommen, um mit dem 41-Jährigen im Rahmen der „Club Apocalypso Summer Nights“-Tour ein paar schöne Stunden zu verbringen. Und die konnte man auch bekommen. Sofern man beim musikalischen Anspruch ein paar Abstriche machte. Egal wie man zu Mikas Musik steht: Seine Qualitäten als Entertainer lassen sich nicht leugnen. Er strahlt nur so voll Energie, kann kaum stillstehen, springt und hüpft und wirbelt über die Bühne und infiziert das Publikum derart mühelos mit seiner guten Laune, als wäre er ein Glücksbärchi auf Speed, das gerade den Regenbogen herunterrutscht. Oder Tigger, der aufgekratzte Freund von Pu dem Bären. Obwohl er dafür nach eigener Aussage noch ein weiteres Kölsch brauchen würde (das erste hat ihm eine Frau aus dem Publikum spendiert; und ja, Mika hat explizit über die Tiere aus dem Hundertmorgenwald gesprochen, und zwar nicht nur en passant). Ist aber auch egal. Dabei spielt es keine Rolle, dass die Background-Sängerinnen aus der Konserve etwa bei „Elle me dit“ mitunter viel zu laut eingespielt werden, dass die Songstrukturen überschaubar sind oder dass Mika längst nicht mehr so mühelos die hohen Töne trifft wie früher. Sein Falsett klingt teilweise richtig gequält, die Kopfstimme nasal, was umso bedauerlicher ist, weil Mika über einen extrem angenehmen, warmen Bariton verfügt, dem er ruhig öfter vertrauen sollte. Doch vielleicht will er nicht so erwachsen klingen, sondern stattdessen in Nimmerland bleiben, um „Billy Brown“ zu singen oder das ABC-Lied, das er am Klavier sitzend seinem Hit „Grace Kelly“ voranstellt. Würden nicht einige seiner Gute-Laune-Pop-Songs darunter leiden, könnte man ihm nichts Besseres wünschen. Denn, und auch das gehört zu dem Phänomen Mika: Er wirkt authentisch, nicht gekünstelt, wie er so über die Bühne (oder bei „Big Girl“ durch die Menge) tanzt und einfach Spaß an dem hat, was er tut. Und wenn er dann über die Liebe redet, wenn er ganz ruhig wird und die 2000 Fans (viele davon erleben ihn an diesem Abend zum ersten Mal) an seinen Lippen hängen, wenn seine Ausstrahlung mühelos bis in die hintersten Winkel des KunstRasens reicht, dann kann man Mika nur bewundern. Über seine Musik mag man geteilter Meinung sein. Doch seine Seele, die glänzt. Und das ist das Wichtigste.
