Chappell Roan

I have a new obsession since a couple of days, and her name is Chappell Roan. A rising pop star with a rapidly growing fanbase, especially after her recent Coachella performance took the internet by storm. 

 

I figured I'd open a topic for her here, because maybe there are other Mika fans who already know her, or who might want to get into her, so it would be fun to talk about her music together 😊. 

 

I'll link a clip of her Coachella performance here, because that's what got me hooked. Her vocal power is incredible, and those lyrics are so raw and full of emotion... I really felt it. She's an obvious talent and I can't wait to see her star rise even more. 

 

There's influences from drag culture, 80s music, it's a bit Kate Bush-esque, it's show, it's emotion, it's real, I love it.

Whoops, I should specify, that song ^ is called Good Luck, Babe!

 

She's a queer artist, so that's the main theme in her music as well. Good Luck, Babe! is from what I understand written about a woman she dated who was closeted and in the end went back to being with a man, because she could not accept her own sexuality. It's sad to think that there are still people to this day who are in a position where they feel that they can't be their authentic selves... those of us who can are actually very privileged in that regard. 

 

She doesn't have a large discography yet, so you can listen to all her songs in basically under 2 hours, but I'll share some of my other favourites:

 

Pink Pony Club reminds me a lot of the message of Mika's Club Apocalypso, a place where you can be yourself without shame, where you're surrounded by like-minded people and won't be judged for who you are:

And my favourite atm, idk, it's just fun to discover a new artist, she tickles my brain the same way Mika does, so I'm hoping to drag some others into this new obsession along with me 🤪

   I hadn't heard of Chappell Roan before now. Hard to say just yet if I'll be a big fan of hers, I haven't been through her whole discography just yet, but I really like the songs you shared above @Jaela!!!

   I had time to listen to a couple others too, Kink is Karma and Casual, these are more growers I think but odds are I'll up liking these just as much the more I listen to them!

 

   Her music videos are super creative and a lot of fun, especially Red Wine Supernova, that has to be my favourite so far!

Ohh finally some Chappell appreciation! I love her  I became obsessed with her when she dropped her debut album, can't wait to hear more. Have you seen that she's coming to Europe soon? London, Paris, maybe Amsterdam if I remember correctly. She's an amazing performer. Every gig during her tour had its own theme, so everyone can get dressed up accordingly, so fun.

Pink Pony Club is my fav song 

 

I hope I get the chance to see her on her next tour or something, right now I can't afford to travel to a Western country again (I did it for Mika, it was worth it ofc)

Yess i saw, unfortunately Amsterdam is fully sold out, and there are about 1200 people who subscribed to the event on Ticketswap in hopes of scoring a ticket 😅. I wonder if they'll maybe upgrade the venue eventually or may book more nights, she's in the Melkweg but that's quite a small venue

 Oh wow! I think a venue upgrade is possible, she's gaining popularity everywhere.

Performing at coachella is a huge thing for a small artist who's just starting out, so fingers crossed for her!

   Stayed in the car for an extra 3 minutes before going shopping today because Good Luck, Babe was about to be played on the radio and I didn't want to miss it! 😅

 

  I haven't really thought much about getting Chappel Roan's album but I'm frequently getting her songs stuck in my head so maybe I should buy it!

3 different MFCers have recommended Chappell Roan to me now so it was time to see what all the fuss was about and I was not disappointed!! Haven't listened to a lot yet but pink pony club is definitely a jam!!

Been listening to the album a lot the past few weeks...

A lot of it reminds me of Mika's music in some way. Like Mika could have written some of those lyrics:

I cannot believe we got so lucky, that ticketsale was intense (for a Mika fan).

Lucky!! I fully forgot about the sale and when i checked at 10:30 there were obviously no tickets anymore

But it's okay, it would have been a bit pricey anyway with the cost of the tickets and then travel to Berlin + accomodation. I'll wait for her to come back to Amsterdam and hopefully i'll manage to secure tickets then despite her immense popularity 😅

I didn't, i think it was sold out already before she had her big break as it was a very tiny venue. There were literally thousands of people on Ticketswap looking for a spare ticket 😅. All in vain in the end ofc... but yeah next time she'll play a bigger venue for sure but i think it will still be a battle similar to trying to get tickets for Billie Eilish or something haha
