2024 - MIKA @ Les Nits de Barcelona, SPAIN, 17 July REPORTS / VIDS / PICS

Don't be so hard on him.

I know it was my first live concert.

They have done very well.

He has had the audience engaged from the first second.

It's been many years since he came to Barcelona and maybe he wanted people who have known him recently to also know his most emblematic songs  (he hasn't sung "Rain" or "Blame it on the girls").

And yes, it's a shame that he hasn't sung any songs from his new French album

Chapeau.

This Wednesday, Mika performed at the Les Nits festival in Barcelona where he almost sold out. That night, in the Gardens of the Palau de Pedralbes in Barcelona, one more date of the Club Apocalypso Summer Nights was anchored, the title that gives its name to the summer tour of the London-based singer, who had not performed in Barcelona since last 2019.

The multifaceted and polyglot artist of Lebanese origin arrived in Barcelona to make a splash, and so he did. With his latest album entirely in French Que Ta Tête Fleurisse Toujours (2023) under his belt, this artist whom we have been able to enjoy lately as a judge on various talent shows in France and Italy and who has enjoyed a sweet rebirth after present the Eurovision Song Contest 2022, came to Barcelona to make us vibrate.

With an almost British punctuality and a “Bona Nit Barcelona!”, an energetic Mika jumped on stage dressed in white and with decorations reminiscent of nudie. He was accompanied by four musicians dressed in pristine white and who remained in the rearguard throughout the concert without taking away the master of ceremonies' prominence one bit. Behind them, neon lights and a large screen that throughout the concert was broadcasting images supporting the fifteen songs that were played one after another.

And from here, and for the next two hours, a tremendous party of pop colors invaded the stands of the Palau de Pedralbes. And it's not easy to do what Mika did. Supported by a great vocal level and a physical extravagance that did not decline throughout the night, the artist knew how to use an endless number of stage tricks that maintained the audience's tension at all times. It should be noted that the complicity that Mika has with his legion of passionate fans makes it seem that they are part of the show itself, giving it greater grandeur if possible.

The pop icon started the concert with Ice Cream and Origin Of Love; perhaps the only songs in which I remember seeing the festive audience sitting down. In the first act of complicity of the night, Mika brought Ada, a fan from the front row, onto the stage to help him translate into Catalan a speech in which the artist joked about the real place where the concert was taking place. . Before an audience already surrendered at his feet, Mika stated that regardless of the origin of each one, the common bond of all attendees should be none other than love.

Next, with the classic Lollipop, he kicked off what, from that moment on and for the rest of the night, would no longer be anything other than a big dance floor. From the first to the last soul in the room stood up never to sit down again. And if anyone tried, Mika would not allow it in any way. After that brilliant start to the show, Mika put the brakes on performing the beautiful Stuck In The Middle With You on the piano; song that he dedicated to his grandmother.

And, again, the party returned with Big Girl (You are Beatiful); song that included the first wardrobe change of the night (I counted to seven). In this great song the fusion of the artist with the public was already total. A Mika decked out in a bright multicolored suit toured the entire audience, merging with a euphoric audience that chanted the chorus to the point of exhaustion. "No one should be judged by their physical appearance," the artist snapped, and then dedicated the song to the owner of the legendary Californian venue Butterfly Lounge.

With Underwater, Mika showed his gratitude to a dedicated fan who had taken the time to make and distribute seven hundred paper fish among the audience so that they would wave while the artist performed the melodic song. At the end of it, he brought the excited girl up to help him lead the audience as a chorus. There were also moments for vindication, like when from the front rows they threw the multicolored LGTBIQ+ flag to an excited Mika who held it in his hands while performing an intense and heartfelt version of Good Guys.

But since nothing is perfect, and to put a few buts, he missed the performance of some of the songs from the last album sung entirely in French. At least that was the unanimous feeling among many of the fans present that night.

The final sprint of a performance that had no pause or respite, was filled with the biggest hits of his career. Popular Song and Billy Brown (with Mika on piano), preceded an Elle Me Dit, which was accompanied by flashes of fireworks. And since they couldn't miss the event, the well-known Grace Kelly and Happy Ending put the final touch on a concert that only featured the encore of the acclaimed Love Today, at the insistence of the public. With a heartfelt “I love you,” Mika said goodbye hugging the members of his band.

In short, a total night for Mika and his fans where there was emotion, dancing, vindication and above all, a very good energy; which in the end is what the artist was trying to achieve from the beginning of the show. And in view of what happened, she more than achieved it. Chapeau.
