J'ai fini ma tournée, je termine le tournage de la nouvelle saison de « The Piano » (série diffusée sur Channel 4), j'ai arrêté la télévision en France, je peux donc m'impliquer à 100 % dans le Téléthon. Je suis vraiment content d'être le parrain de quelque chose de si parfait, concret et remarquable. Et pas seulement d'un point de vue français mais européen. Je n'ai pas encore rencontré les familles - ce sera le 9 octobre, mais j'ai vu l'organisation, la fondatrice, quelques médecins, l'équipe de France Télévisions. J'imagine avec eux comment mes amis de la musique et du cinéma peuvent nous accompagner et encourager les gens à faire des dons. C'est-à-dire ? Si on le fait, il faut le faire à 100 %. J'emmène ma petite équipe, avec qui je travaille sur tous mes projets, et je réfléchis avec l'AFM et France Télévisions à la meilleure manière de m'investir. Quand j'étais petit, j'étais un grand fan de Jerry Lewis, qui a créé le Téléthon aux États-Unis (en 1966). Je l'aimais tellement qu'à 11 ans, j'avais attendu trois soirs à la sortie d'une comédie musicale pour le rencontrer. La première fois que le Téléthon a eu lieu en France, en 1987, il en a été le parrain. Pour ce rendez-vous, Jerry Lewis faisait vingt-quatre heures de télévision non-stop et invitait tous ses camarades de la musique, du cinéma, du sport, les animateurs, les standardistes. On le voyait halluciner de fatigue, tous venaient le soutenir, lui faire à manger. Je lance un défi à tous mes amis de la musique, du cinéma, du sport pour me rejoindre... Si on peut créer une fanfare... Vous semblez impressionné par vos rencontres avec l'AFM... Les résultats sont tellement concrets, c'est inspirant. En France, la mobilisation du public est un exemple pour toute l'Europe. Outre la recherche médicale, ce qui m'intéresse, c'est l'idée de donner de l'espoir. Car on encourage la tolérance et l'amour. On en a plus que jamais besoin aujourd'hui. << J'entre dans une phase de création dans mes studios, en Floride, à Los Angeles, en Italie. J'ai vécu plusieurs expériences très fortes, où on se laisse et on laisse ses proches entièrement dans les mains de ces gens qui ont dédié leur vie à sauver les autres. Je l'ai évidemment vécu avec ma sœur Paloma quand elle a eu son accident (alors âgée de 28 ans, elle avait chuté de 15 mètres et s'était empalée sur une grille). Cela a changé ma perspective sur la vie. La maladie fait partie, avec la naissance, la mort, l'amour et la joie, de ce qui nous réunit tous. Dans ces moments, on apprécie le privilège d'être aidé. Ce qui est remarquable d'ailleurs avec le Téléthon, c'est que tous travaillent pour sauver des vies, pas seulement en France mais autour du monde. Interesting to read that this Telethon thing originated in the US. Does it still exist there? I only know the French version because Mika was on it a few times, never had heard of it before. Wasn't that also the one where he sang on top of the Eiffel Tower a few years ago? I don't really expect that fans outside France will get to see (or understand) much of it, but it sounds like Mika might plan to include his international fans on his social media, as he added the text in English as well. My hope for b) isn't very high, but ofc I wouldn't mind a pleasant surprise. Actually I have….difficult things to tell you about this in the US. By the end of the yearly show (there have been a few attempts to revive it), things were not well. Not only was it kind of a tragic, exploitive, joke-at-the-expense of human dignity event that people with disabilities actually demonstrated against (kids and adults with Muscular Dystrophy on crutches being paraded around singing “look at us we're walking”), but Lewis had been revealed to be a nasty human who had exploited the whole thing for huuuuuuuuuge profit after decades of making people believe he had devoted himself and sacrificed for the cause. He was paid a fortune. Moments of it are still moving, and when I was a kid and young adult I would be a sobbing pile of mush as I watched the huge amounts of money turn the wheel at the end (because they withheld them and revealed them then for dramatic effect..in my olden age I actually understand this manipulation but then it was just one more thing that destroyed our trust in the whole thing), followed by a barely able to function Lewis sing “You'll Never Walk Alone”— still a song that makes me cry—as the show ended. It was One of the Most Dramatic Moments of All Time. What remained was that we had been misled, deceived, manipulated to give money to a cause. We were not told honestly how many of those donations sent by people who could barely afford it ever got to those kids. His work did contribute to scientific breakthroughs but the legacy of the show here remains a scandal and a joke. Oh! Forgot! AMENDED TO SAY: So I just did some research. Interestingly, a lot of the controversy from the years I have referenced have disappeared or been minimized; what you will see is a lot of high praise for Lewis and the telethon and all of its iterations since the original 22+ hour yearly event and its later shorter versions ended. And it's true, this is an iconic show, and it raised billions, with much drama and entertainment. Now it's about courage and not pity, though a lot of people with disabilities will tell you that being called courageous for just living their lives is patronizing. Of course we all know not that Lithgow (who had revised it several times, I think) is no hero (allegedly), etc etc. In the end I trust Mika to bring dignity to the thing, a fresh start, and all that.
