ohhh!

hai!

okay let's go through the basics

Hai --> Hi --> yes/okay

iie --> ee-yeah --> no

Genki desu ka --> genki dess kuh --> how are you?/are you happy?

genki desu --> I'm happy

let's go through the "thankyou" and their tenses

arigatou --> ali ga toh --> thanks

arigatou gozaimasu --> ali gat toh gozz eye ee mus

arigatou gozaimashi-ta --> ali ga toh gozz eye ee mash tuh

A.G:

You would use this when someone is about to do something for you.

Me: Can you pass me my Mika CD please?

you: sure.

Me: arigatou gozaimasu

A.G:

You would use this when someone HAS done something for you.

You: I've sent in my Relax! Card for you

me: arigatou gozaimashi-ta

"masu" is present tense while "mashi-ta" is past tense.

for example, earlier i said "ganbatte masu!" when I said i would "try my best" to teach Laurn Japanese.

"ganbatte-mashi-ta" means "I tried my best"

hokay?

^_^

oh yeah thats it!

with the "arigatou", you'll see i phonetically spelt it with an "L".

that is because the Japanese do not have the letter R in their alphabet. Japanese spelt in the english has an R simply because it is easier for us to get to grips with, but if you listen to a japanese person say "arigatou" or any other word that supposedly has an "R" in it, you'll hear the sound is in between an "R" and an "L" sound. This may be strange because the japanese alphabet also does not contain an "L".

This is why the japanese have difficult with english pronounciations.

example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPPFQ9lgTV8

(then again Tsuji Nozomi is not very patient with english LOL. She looks a bit fugly there but my God have her looks improved)
