meimei88
Mancheseter Evening News Mika - Love Today (Casablanca Records) Mike Caulfield 1st May 2007 3/5 stars WHETHER or not you liked Mika's chart topping debut Grace Kelly, you can't dispute it impact on every sticky disco dance floor up and down the country, filling the good time void the Scissor Sisters neglected with their underwhelming latest disc. Unsurprisingly for someone that used to write jingles for a living, Love Today is infectious, from its faux-disco infused backbeat to the curly haired ones glass-shattering vocal flights that can crack even the most hardened music snobbery shell. And for those who love a bit of flamboyance in their radio hits or ringtones Love Today will most certainly leave you dizzy with good vibes. As with Grace Kelly there very little happening beneath the surface that will trouble any musicologists, put simply this is dumb-but-fun pop. Released on April 23. Akim
dumb-but-fun pop .... Surely its better than that , dumb ... mmm <thinks> I think they're referring to it being light hearted, not making sense, not obviously understandable- little do they know that that was Mika's intention, It's a message packaged in an Alice In Wonderland Way (his own ideas from various sources) The word dumb here is actually not used in the right context and I think its being used because the reviewer just doesn't understand it... Gatagordinha
Thanks Meimei for posting. The bit I don't agree with is this strange "nothing going on underneath to trouble musicologists" (or whatever it was). What exactly should be going on underneath, according to musicologists? In my opinion Mika's music has more "going on underneath" than most contemporary stuff; he has a distinctive arrangement style, use of instruments and of course all the nuances of his voice... "dumb" pop? I don't get this. If they mean accessible, then yes, but not dumb.
